Competency 0002
Interpretive Reading
Read the passage below from 《在酒楼上》, a short story by 鲁迅 (Lu Xun); then answer the five questions that follow.
[Simplified]

- Answer
- Correct Response: A. This question requires examinees to analyze the structure and organization of a text, including how specific parts of the text interrelate and how the author's choices regarding structure and organization within the text are used to achieve particular effects. Once the narrator realizes that all of his colleagues have gone away and that the school's appearance has changed so much, he starts to regret his decision to spend time in the town of S. This marks a turning point in the passage and a change in the narrative mood

- Answer
- Correct Response: D. This question requires examinees to draw logical inferences or conclusions based on the context, situation, and information given in a text and identify evidence to support inferences drawn from the text. In the passage, the narrator states that he has decided to stay in the town of S because he felt indolent and nostalgic. Though his colleagues have left and the school has changed, he recalls with sentimentality familiar places that he used to like. He especially liked the tavern, where he notices that all the people he knew are gone, but everything else is the same. He climbs "the familiar stairway" to find that nothing has changed in the "little upper story," (然而我终于跨上那走熟的屋角的扶梯去了,由此径到了小楼上。
