Chemistry (821)

Registration for the new Chemistry (821) test is now open for testing starting January 27, 2026.

Chemistry is a National Evaluation Series™ (NES®) test. This is the official test to fulfill the content knowledge requirement for candidates seeking an endorsement to a New York teaching certificate.

Format	Computer-based test (CBT): 100 selected-response items, 2 constructed-response items
Time	4 hours and 15 minutes total appointment time 15 minutes for CBT tutorial and nondisclosure agreement 4 hours testing time
Breaks	You may take restroom breaks during testing. Time taken for breaks is considered part of the available testing time.
Test Dates	By appointment year-round, Monday through Saturday (excluding some holidays) Check appointment availability .
Test Sites	Located in New York State and nationwide. Find the nearest test center .
Passing Score	240
Test Features	Constants and Formulas Written Assignment Instructions Written Assignment Scoring Scale This test includes one or more assignments that allow you to handwrite and scan your responses. Review the tutorial video and scanning instructions (the instructions will be available during your test).
Test Fee	$139. Review complete fee and payment policy information.
Score Reporting	View score report dates. Candidates with a test center appointment will receive a receipt of completion at the conclusion of their test.
